Do the Loop: Communities: Dupuyer

Just east of the Rocky Mountain Front Range and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, Dupuyer is located on Highway 89, 60 miles southeast of the St. Mary’s entrance to Glacier Park, and 74 miles northwest of Great Falls. Located along the Trail of the Great Bear which reaches from Mexico to Canada, Dupuyer is one of the oldest towns along the Rocky Mountain Front. A ways back, Dupuyer was a bustling little town when it was a stage stop on the bull-team freight route between Fort Benton and Fort Browning. Today, this small country town has approximately 40 residents who lead a quieter lifestyle but are steeped in the same scenery that brought travelers through the area 10,000 years ago.

As the crow flies, Dupuyer is close to the dramatic and coveted wilderness area known as “The Bob.” Following the back roads west from Dupuyer leads one to access trail heads either up Dupuyer Creek or past the Swift Reservoir at the upper reaches of Birch Creek. The area is abundant in wildlife including deer, elk, grizzly and black bears, mountain sheep and spectacular, scenic beauty. A great stop-over for hikers, fishermen, hunters, snowmobilers, and cross country skiers, Dupuyer sees its fair share of tourists who are simply mesmerized by the scenery.

Access to Boone and Crockett’s Theodore Roosevelt Ranch is southwest of town. Horseback riding, backpacking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing are just a few of the activities you can do with access to the Lewis and Clark National Forest, Bob Marshall and Great Bear Wilderness area. Picnicking and camping in our neighborhood is a treat and there are plenty of choices from the William Jones Memorial Park, just west of town to Swift Dam, way west of town. Slow down on your way through Dupuyer. You’ll find plenty of good reasons to stop and get to know us.
