With only a population of 50 residents, Ovando has more scenery per capita than any other small town in Montana and is remotely situated on Highway 200, 28 miles west of Lincoln, 51 miles east of Missoula, 114 miles west of Great Falls and 88 miles away from Helena.
Surrounded by hundreds of thousands of acres of open ranch country, Ovando is the perfect scenic blend of old and new. One hundred year old buildings are nestled on the beautiful valley floor with the Swan and Garnet mountains rising from its edges. Just by strolling the streets, you will walk through a piece of Montana history and culture.
Ovando is full of recreational possibilities and dreams. It is the southern entry to the Bob Marshall and Scapegoat Wilderness and home to the fabled Blackfoot River and its tributaries. Ovando is the perfect remote spot to spend an hour, a day, a weekend or a week.

During the summer, folks enjoy some of the best fishing in the state, camping along brooks, rivers and lakes, horseback riding and hiking into the mountains and wilderness. Winter snowmobiling on hundreds of miles of groomed trails, cross country skiing on gentle slopes and snow shoeing through rugged terrain are favored winter recreation sports. The turning of the deciduous larches accompanies spring along with the glorious views of wild flowers and the greening of the valley from its ranch land pastures. And of course, fall brings its own spectrum of colors and beautiful warm days.

The Blackfoot Challenge is a landowner-based group that coordinates management of the Blackfoot River, its tributaries, and adjacent lands. It is organized locally and known nationally as a model for preserving the rural character and natural beauty of a watershed. Although its charter dates to 1993, Blackfoot landowners have played an instrumental stewardship role since the late 1970s—bringing conservation easement legislation, walk-in hunting areas and recreation corridor management to Montana.
