Annual Events: Browning

North American Indian Days is a celebration in Browning and is always held the second week in July for four days. It is an intriguing way to see authentic Blackfeet traditions. Tipis are pitched on the powwow grounds for four days of contest dancing, games, a number of sports events and socializing. Comprising one of the largest gatherings of United States and Canadian tribes, the celebration is an unforgettable experience. Once you hear and feel the mystery of the drum, see the traditional and fancy dancing, and the many proud Native people, then you will begin to understand the Blackfeet.

Twenty-six miles south of Browning, Heart Butte's annual celebration takes place the second week in August. Back in the old days, the ancestors used to go from small community to small community along the river valleys. At the Heart Butte Society Celebration dancers compete in all categories, including traditional, fancy, jingle, grass, golden age, chicken, buckskin and team dancing, as well as men's and women's clowns. As always, free camping is featured, as well as showers, wood and security. Two fun runs are generally slated, the Road Warrior Classic and the Southern Piegan Diabetes Program Fun Run. Every day features an aspect of Indian life. Elders, youth and veterans are all honored with days focused on them.
