Russell Country

Discover the wide-open spaces, gracious people and picturesque landscapes that characterize Russell Country. Named for the cowboy artist who captured it all on canvas, Russell Country will capture you as well. Each season holds the promise of a new adventure and an incredible memory. The way of life depicted in Russell's art is now gone, but the landscape remains much the same as it was in his time. The mountains and rivers of his paintings are still ready to explore and enjoy.

Russell Country is a crossroads of history - home to Native American cultures, site of some of the earliest settlements in Montana and the Old North Trail, one of the oldest trails known to mankind. The Blackfeet followed it along the east side of the Rockies from their northern hunting grounds to their southern winter encampments. Approximately 25,000 years ago it extended across the ice bridge from Siberia southward into Mexico. Look for the map at the Choteau Visitor Information Center.
